The Fifth Regiment of the People’s Militia was an important volunteer corps during the early stages of the Spanish Civil War.
Formed on the initiative of the Communist Party of Spain and the Unified Socialist Youth (JSU) in July 1936, following the coup d’état against the Second Republic, it played an active role in the defense of Madrid.
More than just a military unit, the Fifth Regiment carried out social and educational activities, including literacy programs for the working classes and cultural initiatives such as traveling libraries and street theater.
The Fifth Regiment quickly sought to professionalize its cadres in order to improve the effectiveness of the militia units. Like the Red Army, each unit had a political commissar and upheld a discipline that was conscious rather than merely imposed. Juan León “Modesto” and Vittorio Vidali, known as Commander Carlos, were among its prominent leaders.
The Fifth Regiment played a crucial role in initially halting the advance of Franco’s insurgent forces, thereby allowing the resistance to reorganize. In late 1936, it was dissolved and incorporated into the Republican People’s Army, which drew heavily on its experience and principles.
