In May 2006, protests in defense of education in Oaxaca (Mexico) led to an insurrectionary conflict against the Mexican state.
The demonstrations began on May 22 in the city center. In the face of repression and repeated attempts to evict teachers’ organizations in the following weeks, various local social movements formed the Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca (APPO).
In addition to the demands of the education sector, the APPO denounced the corruption and electoral fraud of Oaxacan Governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz, as well as the persecution and judicial targeting of grassroots leaders.
The APPO coordinated barricades and self-defense initiatives, as well as mutual aid social programs. However, state repression, later with the support of the federal government, continued to escalate.
The actions of the security forces left 17 dead and more than 100 people detained. Although the occupation of Oaxaca eventually ended, the struggle generated solidarity throughout the rest of Mexico and internationally.
