The 2006 Lebanon War was a major milestone in recent West Asian history as it marked the first major military defeat of the Zionist entity since its creation.
Israeli occupation forces had made a habit of invading and occupying parts of Lebanon since the late 1960s as it targeted Palestinian militant groups. Local resistance, led by Hezbollah, forced the invaders’ withdrawal in 2000. But six years later, it went further.
To force Israel to follow through on prisoner release agreements, Hezbollah launched a daring rocket attack and cross-border raid against Israeli military positions on July 12, 2006, eventually seizing two Israeli soldiers.
The Zionist entity responded with heavy indiscriminate bombings across South Lebanon and launched a ground invasion. But Hezbollah, relying on powerful rocket attacks and skilled guerrilla fighting, including deadly anti-tank weaponry, inflicted heavy losses on Israeli forces.
Tel Aviv saw no option but to negotiate a UN-mediated ceasefire, and hostilities came to a close on August 14. IDF units withdrew from Lebanon, and Israel’s aura of invincibility was decisively shattered.
